Overview

The Need

University of Tennessee Medical Center needed an easy-to-update, cleanly-designed site that could help organize a large amount of content and provide complex functionality.

The Process

The UX person on the project worked closely with the client to sort through their existing content, discuss their future content needs, and lock-down essential functionality.

The client liked the idea of using WordPress, since they felt comfortable using it for content-entry. WordPress also allowed the team I worked with to use a variety of plugins to handle most of the necessary site functionality.

The UX person created a Sketch file with page template designs. The lead developer on the project broke that design into logical pieces to build, entered details about each piece into Jira tickets, and delegated those tickets to a handful of developers.

I worked with this team of developers to: style site sections, extend plugin functionality with custom PHP, and provide a multi-plugin solution to meet the client’s gift shop and event ticketing payment processing needs. I also provided code-review support, since all non-database-level work was version controlled using Git.

The client and the project’s account coordinator worked to enter content into the site on a staging environment.

Once the client finished entering their content, the project’s QA person worked with the development team to test the site. The QA person entered bug tickets into Jira so that the tasks could be delegated and tracked across the development team.

The Result

The site launched with an updated look, well-organized content, and eCommerce functionality via WooCommerce and Event Tickets Plus.

The client continued to work with our development team to make layout edits and add site functionality - like language translation.
